Goodwood Estate has announced plans for a major transformation of The Goodwood Hotel, reworking the property as a luxury coaching inn with a design intended to reconnect the hotel with its 18th-century origins.
The main hotel will close throughout 2027 for the refurbishment, with the reimagined property expected to welcome guests in early 2028. When complete, it will include 64 bedrooms and 16 new suites, along with two restaurants, a snug, library, boot room and a collection of smaller event spaces.
More than a cosmetic update, Goodwood is positioning the hotel as a gateway to the wider Estate, giving visitors a base from which to experience its motorsport, aviation, golf, wellness, food and countryside offerings.
The property began as an 18th-century coaching inn and was also associated with a market garden that supplied Goodwood House with fruit, vegetables and flowers. The renovation will draw on that history rather than attempting to turn the property into a conventional contemporary luxury hotel.
Hospitality design firm Russell Sage Studio has been commissioned to lead the project. Its previous work includes The Fife Arms in Braemar, Ardbeg House for LVMH, The Goring in London and projects for Hauser & Wirth. At Goodwood, the studio plans to combine the character of a traditional coaching inn with contemporary accommodations while incorporating work from local artists and craftspeople.
Food will also play a significant role in the new hotel. Menus are planned around seasonal produce from Goodwood Farm, tying the restaurants into the Estate’s broader emphasis on farming and locally produced food. Interior design will similarly reference the surrounding landscape and the activities that have developed at Goodwood over generations.
The Duke of Richmond & Gordon describes the project as a return to Goodwood’s longstanding tradition of inviting visitors to participate in the activities pursued on the Estate, from horseracing and farming to aviation and motor racing. The objective is to make the hotel a starting point for exploring Goodwood rather than simply accommodation within it.
For visitors attending the Goodwood Festival of Speed or Goodwood Revival, the closure means the main Goodwood Hotel will not be an accommodation option during the 2027 events. Goodwood’s self-catering holiday cottages will remain available throughout the construction period.
The new Goodwood Hotel is scheduled to open in early 2028, with additional details on its design and construction to be released as work progresses.
