The Prototyp Museum in Hamburg is marking 75 years of Porsche Motorsport with a new special exhibition bringing together racing cars spanning the company’s earliest competition efforts through its modern hybrid era.
RACEBORN – 75 Years of Porsche Motorsport runs from July 10 through September 1, 2026. Organized in cooperation with the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, the exhibition uses ten competition cars to trace Porsche’s development on the racetrack and the relationship between motorsport and its road cars.
The earliest is a 1952 Glöckler-Porsche, representing the small, lightweight racing cars closely associated with Porsche’s formative competition years. It is joined by the unusual 1953 Mathé-Porsche MA-01 “Shed Flyer.”
Porsche’s relatively brief period as a Formula 1 constructor is represented by two cars. The 1960 Porsche 718/2 illustrates the evolution of the company’s successful sports car into a single-seater, while the 1962 Porsche 804 represents Porsche’s purpose-built Formula 1 effort. The 804 delivered Porsche’s only Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix victory as a constructor when Dan Gurney won the 1962 French Grand Prix at Rouen.
Sports car racing forms the core of the exhibition. A 1968 Porsche 908 LH Coupé represents Porsche’s increasingly ambitious pursuit of overall endurance racing victories, while a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR recalls the International Race of Champions and the competition development of the 911.
The Group C period is represented by a 1987 Porsche 962 C, one of the most successful racing designs of its era and a car that became central to Porsche’s factory and customer racing programs around the world.
More recent 911 competition history is covered by a 2009 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of the 997 generation and a 2016 Porsche 911 RSR based on the Type 991. Together, they illustrate two important sides of Porsche’s modern motorsport operation: customer one-make racing and factory-supported international GT competition.
The newest technology represented in RACEBORN comes from the Porsche 919 Hybrid. The 2013 “Rollout” car documents the beginning of the program that returned Porsche to the top category of international endurance racing and ultimately produced three consecutive overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2015 through 2017.
Beyond the individual cars, RACEBORN examines Porsche’s longstanding use of motorsport as a development environment. The exhibition covers technical innovations tested in competition as well as the importance of independent customer teams, which have played a major role in Porsche’s racing history for much of the past 75 years.
For visitors to Hamburg, the exhibition also offers an opportunity to see significant cars normally associated with the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart within the very different surroundings of the Prototyp Museum, whose permanent collection focuses on sports and racing cars, prototypes and the people responsible for their development.
