Most people’s first driving lesson isn’t especially memorable. A parking lot, quiet neighborhood street or empty industrial park usually provides the setting. Goodwood is offering young drivers a rather more interesting alternative: their first experience behind the wheel can now happen at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.
The historic British motorsport venue has launched two Junior Driving Experiences aimed at drivers who aren’t yet old enough to hold a UK driving license. Depending on age, participants can learn the fundamentals in a modern BMW 230i on the circuit and skid pan or tackle a manual transmission and off-road driving in a classic Series IIA Land Rover.
Bookings opened August 13, with the first sessions scheduled for November 8, 2026 and January 24, 2027.
First Drive: Goodwood Motor Circuit
The Junior Driving Experience: Track and Skid Pan is available to children aged 12 and older who are at least 1.5 meters, or about 4 feet 11 inches, tall.
Goodwood supplies an automatic BMW 230i, allowing first-time drivers to concentrate on steering, braking, observation and controlling the car without simultaneously learning how to operate a clutch.
Instruction takes place around Goodwood’s Motor Circuit and low-grip facilities, where exercises are designed to introduce vehicle control in a controlled environment. Each session is adapted to the driver’s ability, with challenges becoming progressively more involved as participants gain experience.
It’s a considerably different introduction to driving than a typical learner’s first encounter with a car.
Goodwood Motor Circuit opened in 1948 and became one of Britain’s most important postwar racing venues. Its original competition era included some of the greatest names in motorsport before racing ended there in 1966. The circuit was eventually restored and returned to competition through the Goodwood Revival.
Today, the same circuit hosts historic racing, track experiences and testing. Now it can also be where a 12-year-old learns how to steer a car for the first time.
Learning a Manual in a Series IIA Land Rover
For older participants, Goodwood has gone in an entirely different direction.
The Junior Driving Experience: Off-Road Adventure is open to drivers aged 14 and older, again with a minimum height requirement of 1.5 meters. Rather than a modern automatic, Goodwood puts them behind the wheel of a classic Series IIA Land Rover with a manual transmission.
The experience begins on the Motor Circuit, where instructors teach the fundamentals of clutch control, gear selection and smooth vehicle operation.
Once those basics are established, the lesson moves onto Goodwood’s dedicated activity field. Young drivers encounter slalom exercises, changing terrain and off-road obstacles designed to develop vehicle control while demonstrating what the old Land Rover can do away from pavement.
The choice of vehicle gives the program another distinctly Goodwood element. Instead of simply creating a junior version of a modern driving school, the experience combines learning a skill that is becoming increasingly uncommon – operating a manual transmission – with one of Britain’s most recognizable vehicles.
Building Drivers, Not Just Giving Rides
Goodwood is positioning both programs as more than novelty experiences.
Sessions are tailored to each participant, with missions and exercises intended to develop observation, coordination and vehicle control. Returning drivers can move on to new exercises and progressively more challenging tasks rather than simply repeating the same experience.
“Everyone remembers their first time behind the wheel,” said Goodwood Motor Circuit General Manager Sam Medcraft. “We wanted to create an experience worthy of that moment.”
The broader objective is to teach confidence and respect for a car while introducing the enjoyment of driving before participants begin the process of earning a road license.
There’s also something encouraging about the timing. As new cars become increasingly automated and electrified, Goodwood is investing in a program centered on the act of driving itself. One experience teaches young drivers how a car behaves at the limit of grip. The other teaches them how to operate a clutch, select their own gears and negotiate difficult terrain.
And both happen at a place built around the idea that driving can be more than transportation.
